The Federal Department of Agricultural Land and Climate Change Management Services attended the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) presentation for 2022, themed ‘Flood Management and Food Security by Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency which was held on the 12th of May, 2022 at West African College of Physicians, Abuja.

HIGHLIGHT OF 2022 FLOOD OUTLOOK PREDICTION INCLUDES:

The annual flood events were divided into three scenarios:

Scenario i: Flood outlook for the months of April-June

Scenario ii: Flood outlook for the months of July- September

Scenario iii: Flood outlook for the months of October- November

The 2022 AFO forecast indicated that 233 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 32 states of the Federation and the FCT fall within the Highly Probable Flood Risk Areas.

It is expected from the forecast that 212 LGAs in 35 states of the Federation including FCT fall within Moderately Probable Risk Areas

While 329 LGAs fall within the Less Probable Flood Risk Areas.

(Meaning all the 774 LGAs of the Country will experience flooding)

The Highly Probable Flood Risks States are Adamawa, Abia, Akwa-ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross-River, Delta, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Zamfara State and FCT.

MONTHLY BASES ANALYSIS ON HIGHLY PROBABLE RISK AREAS FROM THE MONTHS OF APRIL AND NOVEMBER

The level of flood in this category is expected to be high in terms of impact on the population, Agriculture, Livelihood, livestock, infrastructure, and the environment:

57 LGAs in the country fall within highly probable risk areas in the months of April, May and June

220 LGAs in the months of July, August, and September

38 LGAs in the months of October and November

MONTHLY BASES ANALYSIS ON MODERATE PROBABLE RISK AREA FROM THE MONTHS OF APRIL AND NOVEMBER

The Moderate impact levels of floods are expected in parts of 45 LGAs within the months of April, May and June

140 LGAs in the Months of July, August and September
